The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. I’m stealing the opening of Lord of the Rings. For none now who live will remember it. Except for all the people who has seen the movie or read the books. So, the whole world basically.
There was Hitler. There was Stalin. There was Mussolini. There was countless other historical assholes that are not as well known for their equally not so nice deeds to the world. My thought is this; What if powerful dictators in the future would use even more advanced technology than we have today to achieve even greater power than the dictators from history that we used to fear?
In one of PewDiePie’s videos (I don’t know if I should be ashamed for watching his videos everyday BUT I’M NOT!!) he tested an eye tracker. He watched random videos on the internet and the eye tracker showed PewDiePie’s viewers exactly where on the screen he was looking. Now, put that in the context of propaganda. Forgive my possibly childish imagination, but picture that people had to watch propaganda videos and if they didn’t look at the screen, or if they looked at the wrong thing on the screen, they would get punished. It’s probably and hopefully not a realistic scenario, but i think it’s important to think about it at least.
What if a dictator felt like dealing with opposition by getting some people to hack the self driving car being used by someone who is a threat? One lethal car accident later and the problem is gone. Spying on people with nano sized robot flies (it’s a thing, Google it) would be the easiest thing ever for the dictator to do. Artificially creating your face and make you say things that you have never even said to trick the public to think it’s actually you saying those things (Google Obama Peele DeepFake) would be a perfect tool for propaganda.
George Orwell’s 1984 is my nightmare and I feel like; Technology + Orwellian society = 1984 on steroids. Maybe I’m exaggerating, please tell me and correct me if I do. I just wished that I didn’t have to think in these ways because I’m actually amazed and very interested in where technology is going. It could take us to a place that would be defined as paradise. You never know, maybe nothing too bad happens. It’s impossible to predict.
I just can’t let go of these horrible possibilities. Human cruelty is chaos when it’s set free.
